NESB Support
Our aims and objectives are:
- To provide support to refuge workers of cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD);
- To provide workshops in relevant issues affecting the refuge in order to improve workers' skills;
- To foster the establishment and development of a network of services for women and children of CALD backgrounds;
- To research the needs of women and children of CALD backgrounds accessing refuge services, the needs of refuge workers supporting these women and children, and develop strategies to ensure that these needs are met;
- To ensure that women and children of CALD backgrounds are represented in discussion, planning and policy making at all levels in the refuge movement and women's services as a whole.
Over the years, the NESB support group has experienced many ups and downs. In 1992, it had sixty-seven members from thirty-four women's refuges. The group had a strong membership who worked effectively in the beginning, however this has declined over the years due to various factors,
including lack of a NESB delegate, support and commitment from workers, as well as an already heavy workload for many refuge workers. Currently, we are trying to encourage consistent attendance at NESB Support meetings, as well as commitment and support to issues affecting women and children
of CALD backgrounds accessing refuge services. Although work commitments have prevented NESB Support from meeting monthly as they had done in the past, workers will be kept informed of a regular meeting time.
We invite all NESB workers to join the group, so as to enable us to continue advocating for, and representing the interests of all women and children of CALD backgrounds escaping domestic violence.
